So far in part 1 we looked at why the Name is so important – we must know it to love it. Then in part 2 we delved into the etymology of the name as a normal Hebrew word, to find out what would have conveyed to the children of Israel… the answer is “Cause to breath!”. Then in part 3, we followed Yahweh’s explanation to Moses and see that the name Yahweh is the family name given to a multitude of Elohim (mighty ones).
The question is who is part of this family and what part can we have in this?
Breath of life
We have mentioned before that the Yahweh means “cause to breath!”. We plan to address the concept of “breath” in future word studies, for the moment we will draw attention to the beautiful link to the creating of man. Yahweh formed Adam’s body from the dust and he breathed life into him.
Gen 2:7 And Yahweh Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living breathing thing.
Christ is described as the second Adam as compared to the first Adam (1 Cor 15:45-47). Both of them the “son of God” (Luke 3:38), and both typically created the same way. The body of Christ is the Ecclesia εκκλησια (Eph 5:23, 30, Col 1:18,24), and it is being formed from the Abrahamic dust, the seed of Abraham according to the promises of old; compare Gen 2:7 with Gen 13:16, 28:14.
Right from the beginning this hope is a global hope. Adam and Eve were commanded, before the fall, to multiply and fill the earth. This was the plan and purpose from the very beginning.
Gen 1:28 And Elohim blessed them, and Elohim said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply (rav רב), and fill the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth
But instead it was filled with violence (Gen 6:11). So Yahweh brought the flood and destroyed his creation, only saving a remnant, an Ecclesia εκκλησια, protected in the ark. And he gave them exactly the same command:
Gen 9:1 And Elohim blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply (rav רב), and fill the earth
However wickedness multiplied (rav רב), and men’s hearts were only evil all the day! (Gen 6:5)
So what is the solution then? The purpose and method of the Creator was always the same. He knows the end from the beginning and nothing is hid from him, as we see in the glorious pattern of the garden of Eden – our future hope. Nothing demonstrates this more clearly than the prophetic seven days of creation, which type the following six thousand years and the millennial rest of the seventh (Heb 4:3-4). More on that later… Yah willing!
In the promises to Abraham we see a subtle change from the previous promises. Yahweh promises that he himself will realised his plan… success is no longer left to man. Yahweh will multiply, rav רב, a seed to Abraham (Gen16:10), which will fill the earth as he has commanded (Apoc 20).
Gen 18:18 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall cause themselves to be blessed in him
Yahweh is a family name, and Yahweh Elohim is a multitudinous body of mighty ones declaring the name, bearing his glory. So that all who see and hear them may know by experience the character of the father, for they are his children (2 Cor 3:2-3). In the millennial reign of Christ, they will go forth and call the whole world to him (Apoc 22:17). The same message from the beginning… Yahweh – “cause to breath!”.
My people Israel
Israel are the eretz ארץ, or earth, out of which the second Adam will be formed. They are also a prophetic national type of Christ and his bride. In their gathering as a nation they are typing the eventual gathering of the Abrahamic seed – Yahweh Elohim. For this purpose Israel was formed into a people.
Isa 43:15 I Yahweh, your Holy One,the creator of Israel, your King.
Described by the Father “My people” (Exo 3:7, Psa 81:8, Isa 1:3, Ezk 11:20, Heb 8:8-13). For the express purpose of baring the name of Yahweh, that all peoples may know his name,
Gen 12:2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing
There name was Yahweh Elohim, for they bore the name of their father:
Dan 9:19 my Lord, hear; my Lord, forgive; my Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my Elohim (Mighty ones): for thy city(Jerusalem) and thy people(Israel) are called by thy name.
Elohim and children of their father,
Psa 82:5 They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course
6 I have said,Ye are Elohim (gods – heb. mighty ones); and all of you are children of the most High.
7 But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.
8 Arise, O Elohim, judge the earth: for thou shalt inherit all nations.
The mortal children of Israel are described as Elohim, mighty ones, or as we have in the AV “gods”. Elohim describes the the mental state of the person, not their physical nature. Ambassadors of the father, regardless of whether they are mortal people or immortal angels. If they are empowered by the will of the spirit, they are indeed mighty ones.
When mortal Elohim, mighty ones, do not keep the commandments of Yahweh then they are not immune – by any means – to the consequences of their actions. They will “die like men”.
Therefore we ought to take earnest heed to the things which we have heard. We have all the scriptures… even the testimony of the Son, which brings with it great responsibility (Heb 2:1-3). We comfort in that if we turn from wickedness we will be forgiven. Yet vigilant in the warning that turning to wickedness means rejection (Ezk 33:11-19).
Let us then read and harken, gaining the blessing of understanding that we may escape the judgement of our age (Apoc 1:3).
The historical kingdom of Israel, although a wonderful type, was not the fulfilment of the promises made to the fathers of old. That kingdom was based upon the covenant made with the children of Israel mediated by Moses. “Which things are a pattern of the things in the heavens”… which is to say they describe the order and nature of the political heavens of the millennial age, the future kingdom of Israel (Heb 8:5, 9:23).
Due to the “spiritual wickedness in the heavenlies” (Eph 6:12), the apostasy of the leaders of Israel. Elohim who should have been bearing the name of Yahweh, yet by the traditions made of none effect the word of Yahweh. The mosaic heavens and earth had waxed old, and would be folded away as a garment and be changed (Heb 1:10-12).
This pattern has been repeated many times in the past, and will continue to be repeated as long as flesh inhabits the Earth (Apoc 20).
Though the garment be changed, the body Yahweh Elohim remains the same (Heb 1:11). And though the body be tried, it will not be consumed. There will be a remnant purged by the fire.
Exo 3:2 And the angel of Yahweh appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush:and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
The children of Israel have and will continue to be Yahweh’s witnesses (Isa 43:10). Though removed from being the people of Yahweh, they have not been replaced, they will be taken back again (Hab 2:23). They will once again declare the glory of Yahweh to the nations, the bride reunited with her husband.
Apoc 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
May we prepare ourselves for the day when we are called by our national husband. Sons and daughters of the most high, kings and priests of Yahweh, declaring his name throughout the whole earth… “Cause to breathe!!!”. Till all peoples manifest the character of their father.
Hopefully in this opening study I have enthused a few more to study the name. Over the next few weeks, Yah willing, there will be a series of short word studies, as and when I can find the time.
We plan to look at the characteristics of the name to start off with, which should bring out the exhortational aspects of the name that were missing for lack of time here. I’m conscious that this first study was a little on the academic side, although I hope you will agree necessary to provide a foundation for the other studies for those who had not studied the name before.
Love in the hope of Israel,
